What is equity release?

The value that you own in your home is your equity. If you want to work out how much equity you have, you simply take the value of your home and take away any loans secured against it.

Equity release works by allowing you to borrow some of that value as a tax-free cash lump sum. At Reader's Digest Equity Release, we can offer you no-obligation advice on the most popular equity release product, a Lifetime Mortgage.

With a Lifetime Mortgage, you can release your tax-free cash without selling your home and without having to commit to monthly payments. Instead, interest will be added to the loan and increase over time. Once you pass away or enter permanent long-term care, the full amount plus interest will usually be repaid with the sale of your home.

What are the most popular uses for equity release?

The decision to release equity is a personal one, and there are many goals that you might want to achieve with your tax-free cash. If you need a little inspiration however, here are some of the most popular reasons why our customers choose to release equity:

  • Home improvements – with a tax-free sum, you could put cash towards achieving the home of your dreams.
  • Mortgage repayment – clearing an existing mortgage is a very popular use for equity release. Without the pressure of required repayments, you could have more money with which to enjoy the little things.
  • Income boost – it’s true that for many of us, an increased cost of living coupled with low interest savings accounts has meant that we have less in retirement than we expected. With equity release, you could have a welcome cash boost to help you live more comfortably.
